A moment’s observations easily reveals how we as individuals typically do not take the long-view in life or endeavors at work. Our decisions are based on short-term constraints, benefits, pleasures or gratifications more than strategic perspectives, long-range goals, or positively effecting our environment. Everyone is somewhere along that spectrum, but we tend to decide things based on short-term gains. It’s built into our DNA passed through millions of generations. Our brains are such a recent development and we are still learning how to use them.
One of the basic tenets of the Biz of You is to take the long-view and look at our lives in their entirety. The time between our birth and unknown age of death is all we have. It’s up to us to make the best use of it and even do things with our time having positive affects beyond the horizon of our lives. When we manage ourselves, we need to take into account we only have so much energy to apply to a given situation. As we go through life, our decisions, spending and lending beget responsibilities. Having integrity and accountability, we necessarily have to manage our energy and time to meet those responsibilities. If we don’t we simply push it upon someone else or some other system negatively impacting the world around us. As we hold ourselves accountable on a day-to-day basis for our responsibilities given to us by our past selves, we are left with available free time. How we spend that time directly effects our life satisfaction and the impact we have on other’s biz.
