“If you’re too worried about the past, you can’t see the future.”

My daughter Jordan reads my posts on occasion and even comments. She’s nine going on thirteen. Every now and again she comes to me with ideas about a post or some thought-provoking my interest. Just last night she asked if anyone had ever said the quote above. We looked it up and didn’t find anything directly using those words. There are numerous thoughts about letting go the past and living in the now but not specifically how she put it. So, I told her I’d put her quote out on the internet.
What’s interesting is at work I see the people and even myself worrying about how things used to be. We get caught up in what we do and sometimes say or at least think things like, “That’s how we’ve always done it.” The principle is the same. We can’t see the future when we are so wrapped up in what happened or how we did things in the past. I can totally relate to making things easy by doing what we’ve already done, but doing so has the potential to short circuits our ability to adapt to our present situation.
A key component of the Biz of You is observing what’s unfolding around you and adapting to it so we can bring about our vision for the future. And as my daughter said, “If you’re too worried about the past, you can’t see the future.” To reiterate it in the guise of managing the biz of you, “If you are too worried about the past, you can’t see how to create the future ever-unfolding around you.”
Thank you Jordan for allowing me to share your thoughts with others.
